Obituary

Chester A. Thurlow, Jr., known affectionately as Chet to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully at

Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air on September 26, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on January 6, 1940,

in Baltimore, Maryland, Chet was a beloved husband, teacher, and friend who left an indelible

mark on the hearts of all who knew him.

Chet's journey through life was marked by a passion for education and a commitment to his community.

Chester honorably and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.

After a fulfilling academic career, he graduated with a degree in Education, which laid the foundation for

his lifelong vocation as a Social Studies teacher at Aberdeen High School. Over the course of his career,

he enlightened the minds of countless students in grades 9 through 12, sharing not only the facts of history

and government but also the values of citizenship and critical thinking.

Chet was married to his cherished wife, Annabelle Thurlow, for 52 wonderful years.

Their partnership  was a testament to unwavering love and mutual respect.

Chet's legacy of kindness and wisdom continues through the lives he touched.

Those who knew Chet would remember him as a kind, wise, and intelligent individual. His kindness

was evident in the gentle way he approached both teaching and life. Students and colleagues alike

sought his wisdom, which he dispensed with a measured and thoughtful demeanor. His intelligence

was not just academic but also emotional, as he navigated the complexities of human relationships

with grace and understanding.

Beyond the classroom, Chet had an array of interests that enriched his life. He was an avid reader, always with a book

in hand, ready to explore new worlds and ideas. Traveling was another passion, and he and Annabelle embarked

on many adventures together, each trip adding to their trove of cherished memories.

As we say farewell to Chester A. Thurlow, Jr., we celebrate a life well-lived. He was a beacon of light

to all who had the pleasure of crossing his path. His teachings will resonate through generations, and

his memory will be lovingly cherished. Chet's story is one of love, dedication, and the profound impact

one person can have on the world around him. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire

all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Chet was a member of the Havre de Grace United Methodist Church where he served as an usher and

was a board member of the United Methodist Men.

Preceding him in death was his only brother, Richard J. Thurlow. Surviving family members are his wife,

Annabelle Johnson Thurlow; sister-in-law, Frances Marie Thurlow; nephews Christopher Thurlow, Brad Thurlow

and Jamie Thurlow; brother-in-law Bud Johnson; brother-in-law, Randy Johnson and his wife Pam Johnson,

Mr. Chester Thurlow was an excellent teacher and a favorite of many students. His sense of humor was greatly appreciated when learning about US History. The members of the Class of '72 were so glad he was able to attend our 50th reunion in 2023. He was a great man!

I’m so sorry to hear of Chet’s passing. We met over 50 years ago when we came to Aberdeen to teach. My husband, Tom Baine, and Chet were good friends and colleagues. Annabelle taught Art. We partied together and we’ve grown old together. It’s sad to see our friends leave us but one by one they do. Chet was a good man, good friend and family man. So many memories. Rest in peace, my friend.

He was my US History teacher when I was a junior. I’ll never forget taking notes feverishly trying to get everything he said in his lectures. I loved hearing his stories that connected to what he was teaching.
