Obituary

Hazel S. Coen, of Level, MD, passed away on June 7, 2025 at Caraway Assisted Living in Elkton, MD. Born in Havre de Grace, MD, in 1928 to the late Leonard W. and Annie M. Stearn, Hazel lived a life full of warmth, kindness, and unwavering love for her family and friends.

Hazel was married to her first husband, J. Walter Norris, in 1952. They had two daughters, Susan Morgia (Fred) and Sharon Davenport (James). After 26 years of marriage, Walter passed away. Hazel later married George Coen in 1981, and they spent 16 years together before George’s passing.

"She had various careers, including time as a stay-at-home mom, a school bus driver, and culminating in her retirement from Aberdeen Proving Ground after many years of dedicated service."

A lifelong member of Hopewell United Methodist Church in Level, Maryland, Hazel devoted over 40 years as the Church Choir Director. In addition to her leadership in music ministry, she served faithfully in many other roles, including United Methodist Women, Pollyanna, Finance, and more. Her unwavering dedication to her faith and church community was a cornerstone of her life.

Though her faith and work were central to her life, Hazel’s greatest joy was found in her role as a grandmother, affectionately known as "Grammy" to her grandchildren: Kristen Hinson (Michael, Jr.), Benjamin Davenport (Trinity), Kaitlyn Amberg (Derrick), Austin Davenport (Jenna), Jessica Morgia (Dave), Jacqueline Martone (Joe), and Judith Morgia (Travis), as well as her nine beloved great-grandchildren.

Hazel is also survived by her brother, Vernon Stearn (Sue), and sister, Esther Carr.

She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, James Davenport, grandson-in-law, Michael Hinson, Jr., and her siblings: Leonard Stearn Jr., Kenneth Stearn, Eldon Stearn, Harold Stearn, Carl Stearn, Myrtle Mahan, Mildred Laye, and Nettie Insley.

Pallbearers are Kristen Hinson, Benjamin Davenport, Kaitlyn Amberg, Austin Davenport, Steve Stearn and Don Carr.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hopewell United Methodist Church, 3600 Level Village Rd, Havre de Grace, MD 21078, in Hazel's memory.

Mrs. “Norris” was our bus driver at Churchville Elementary Shcool. Bus #242. I have so many memories of her on that bus. Through the years I would see her at Kiein’s or in a parking lot and I had to go say hi. She was so special! I could never remember her new last name but he would gently remind me. To Susan and Sharon, my deepest condolences. To all of her loved ones, treasure the memories she left you. More than 50 years later, I still do. Shannon Malat (Travers)
