Ruth B. Hopkins

Ruth married Nathan D. Smith II in 1938, and they resided in Carsins Run near her parents and brother. Ruth had three children: Mark H. Smith of Darlington, MD., David Bowman Smith (deceased), Linda S. Ropelewski of Frederick, MD, and her stepson Nathan D. Smith III (deceased). After a short time in Chestertown, MD., N.D. and Ruth resided in Darlington, MD. Ruth was very proud to serve as Postmaster in the Darlington Post Office, and as an officer in Postal organizations. She loved her work and the many people she served. She was also an active member of the Darlington United Methodist Church and the Harford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Ruth was widowed in 1967. After many years of traveling with her fellow Postmasters, Ruth married Earl B. Hopkins of Darlington in 1979. They shared many happy years together until his passing in 1998. Ruth was very proud of her grandchildren: William D. Smith, Stephen M. Smith, Mark D. Smith, Diana S. Whayland, Nathan D. Herman, Dr. Rebecca Herman-Smith, Sandra G. Riechenbach and Stephen E. Ropelewski. There are thirteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was surrounded by family in her final hours. Her Pallbearers were Nathan Herman, Greg Smith, Anthony Riechenbach, Steve Ropelewski, Steve Smith and devoted son-in-law, Stephen Ropelewski. Honorary Pallbearers were Mark H. Smith and William D. Smith. Any contributions in remembrance of Ruth may be directed to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702. The viewing was held at Tarring-Cargo Funeral home in Aberdeen on October 20 and funeral services were held on Wednesday at Smith's Chapel Methodist Church.
