Obituary
Charlotte, Martha, Margretta, Luisa Eckert Burr, age 98 of Church Hill, TN, passed away on September 14, 2025.
Charlotte was born on April 9, 1927 in Breslau Germany, the daughter of Ernst and Luisa Eckert.
After she surrendered her life to Jesus, she lived life with purpose, faith, and adventure. Her life was a journey of courage, joy and meaning. Though her time on earth cannot be fully captured in words, her life was a testimony.
During WWII, at the age of 17, she had to leave all behind in her village to escape the Russians who had occupied Braslau. The Lord guided her through places unknown to her. She served as a Red Cross nurse to German troops and was a guest USO dancer to the US military. She enjoyed the arts and even served as a general cast member of the 1943 German movie “Circus Rentz”.
She met the love of her life, Glen Edward Burr, US Army in Marlburg, Germany after the war ended. They married and began their adventure together.
They lived in Germany and had their first daughter Evelyn. While stationed in France, they had two more daughters. Second daughter Kathy, and third daughter, Sylvia. Kathy was born with a severe disability, so doctors recommended that Kathy live in an institution, but Charlotte and Glen refused and chose to raise her in a loving home.
They then moved to Monterey California, where her husband was stationed at Ft. Ord before he was sent to Korea. Being in a new country without her husband, Charlotte raised her 3 girls on her own and also studied and became a US citizen. After her husband returned, they took the journey across the country in an Edsel with their children and a parakeet to Maryland.
After two years, Glen was stationed to go to Germany. Being 7 months pregnant, Charlotte still made the journey, sharing a one-bedroom apartment with her husband, children and mother. Charlotte made the small living arrangements with joy and courage and daughter Trish was born.
Charlotte and family made the final journey back to America by a military ship. The ship had a broken rudder from a gale in the open ocean, but God once again protected her and her family. Back in the United States, Charlotte and family settled in Aberdeen Maryland.
Charlotte had a passion for many things – gardening and golfing with her husband, painting, ceramics, and photography. She studied photography with published photographer, James Warner. Johns Hopkins Hospital later purchased Charlotte's photography which was displayed at the newly built Nelson 4 Wing for many years. She enrolled in college while she was in her sixties and was proud to earn an AA degree from Harford Community College.
She was actively involved with the Christian Women’s Club luncheons and was often asked to speak about her escape and journey during WWII. A former member of Oak Grove Baptist church, she also participated in making decorations for the Living Christmas Tree productions.
She is preceded in death by Glen Burr, her husband of 63 years, her parents, and her brothers.
She is survived by:
Her children Evelyn, Kathy, Sylvia (Steve), and Trish (Jeff).
Her grandchildren Bob, Brian (Robin), David, Christina (Jake), Julia (Steven)
