Obituary

"I shall pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again" - anonymous William "Bill" G. Yates passed peacefully on this day July 23rd 2016. Bill was married to his loving wife Suzanne Malcolm Cole, recently celebrating their fifty second wedding anniversary. During the course of those fifty two years, Bill and Sue were blessed with the birth of their three loving children. Bill is survived by his wife, his son Marc Yates (Stephanie) of Clarksville, TN, his daughter Lesley Paige Baldwin (Kevin) of Silver Spring, MD and his son Andrew Yates (Jane) also of Silver Spring, MD and his beloved grandchildren Megan Yates and Madisen Baldwin. Also surviving Bill are his nieces Suzanne and Carole Chilton of DE and brother-in-law Dr. Lee Elgin of Tallahassee, FL and his nieces and nephews Cindy, Laura, William, Randy, and Stephen. Bill proudly served his country for 22 years retiring as a decorated Lt. Colonel from the United States Army in 1980. He was a Vietnam Veteran, and completed tours in Europe, Korea and the United States. William served as Senior Aide-De-Campe under the General of the Communication Zone in Europe where he and his wife traveled extensively. Subsequent to his military career, he transitioned into the private sector where he worked as a Logistics Program Manager at AAI Corporation in Cockeysville, MD and completed his career as a Senior Defense Acquisition Specialist for Science Applications Int'l Corp. (SAIC) in Abington MD. Bill was a graduate of Polytechnic Institute in Baltimore and Mount Saint Mary's College in Emmitsburg, MD. Bill was a member of Grove Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen MD and held memberships in the Society of Logistics Engineers, Association of the United States Army, National Association of Uniformed Services, and the Military Officers Association of America. During his foreign travels with the military, he took pride in engaging in philanthropies such as supporting orphanages in foreign countries. Bill loved to entertain and possessed a wonderful sense of humor. He was active and present in the community coaching little league and a troop leader for the Boy Scouts. He leaves behind those of us to cherish the memories shared by his children and family. In loving memory of our beloved husband, father, brother, grandparent, uncle and friend, William "Bill" Yates. Our condolences to the Yates family. Bill was a great mentor to me while working at SAIC, he was an inspiration to me and always kept me on my toes. I will miss his smiling face at Grumpy's and as he traveled around town.
