I have treasured a memory of Mrs. Ward for many years. When I was a child in Aberdeen, growing up on Plater Street, we were neighbors to Mrs. Ward and her family. Around 1960, I was playing in the woods behind the houses when I was stung by when seemed to be a vast hoard of bees (maybe it was just a few bees, but I was not even in the first grade so my viewpoint was subject to exaggeration.) I believe the swarm of bees actually chased me from the woods to Plater Street. When I reached home to my mother, she scooped me up and ran to Mrs. Ward's house next door (my mother, who was either 29 or 30 years old, didn't have a Maryland driver's license yet, but Mrs. Ward did drive!). Mrs. Ward rushed us out to her car (it was a greenish or blueish-colored car), and she quickly drove myself and my mom up to Doctor Plunkett's office on Bel Air Avenue, about a mile away. He gave me some medicine, maybe a shot. Mrs. Ward drove us back home. I recall her being very reassuring to my mom. I will never forget the day the bees chased me and how Mrs. Ward saved the day.
