Obituary

David G “Jerry” McGlothlin, age 76, died on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at his home after a lengthy battle with heart and lung disease. Mr. McGlothlin was born December 25, 1940, the younger son of Claude A. and Vera S. McGlothlin. The family resided at Perry Point Village and Jerry attended Perryville schools, graduating from Perryville High School in 1958. Mr. McGlothlin attended Washington College in Chestertown, MD and West Chester University, PA, from which he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1965. While there, he managed the Golf Team during his Junior and Senior years, and continued his pursuit of this “maddening, yet wonderful, sport” from that time on. He worked for 29 years for the Department of Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground, where he held a succession of positions culminating in the position he enjoyed the most: Labor/Management Employee Relations Specialist in the Civilian Personnel Office. After retirement, he worked at Ruggles and Plumb Point Golf Courses on APG for several years. Mr. McGlothlin was active in his church, Grace United Methodist Church in Aberdeen, MD. He served 18 years on the Administrative board; two terms as Chair of the Staff/Parish Relations Committee, and continually, along with his wife, was a church usher. He was also a choir member for a number of years. He served as Chair of the Personnel Advisory Committee for the City of Aberdeen, and also on the City’s Taxicab Bureau. Earlier, he had served as Player Agent and Manager in the Perryville Little League. He served in the Maryland Army National Guard, being Federally activated on two occasions. He also served two terms as Post Adjutant of Susquehanna Post 135 of the American Legion in Perryville. Mr. McGlothlin’s enjoyment of athletics started in his early school days. He was awarded varsity letters in high school for participation in soccer, basketball, baseball, and track. He was particularly proud of starting and finishing as Perryville’s pitcher in a 15-inning victory over Bel Air. He also got the game winning hit in that game. He played soccer at both Washington College and West Chester University. Later, he played club soccer for Perryville, North East, and Elkton teams as Goalkeeper. As local baseball waned, he played fast-pitch, and finally slow-pitch, softball at the Marylander Club, the Rising Sun Legion Field League, and in the Cecil County Industrial Leagues. Mr. McGlothlin was pre-deceased by his father and mother and his brother, C. Marvin McGlothlin. He is survived by his beloved wife, Leslie McGlothlin; a daughter, Stephanie Greene and husband Justin; a son, David G. McGlothlin Jr.; his step-son William Murphy III and wife Karen; and a step-daughter Karen Murphy. He is also survived by three grandchildren: William Murphy IV, Kaitlyn Murphy, and Finnegan McGlothlin. Other surviving family members include cousin Jean Crane and husband Robert; nieces Deborah Emge and Pam Yingling, and their children and grandchildren. There will be a Celebration of Life at 2pm on October 14, 2017, at Grace United Methodist Church, 110 W. Bel Air Avenue in Aberdeen, MD. Friends and family may visit between 12 – 2pm at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice or the Grace United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, in Jerry’s name.

Dear Leslie and family, We send you our deepest sympathies on the death of Jerry. So sorry we will not be available to attend the celebration of life as we have other commitments. Jerry was a great man and we enjoyed the years we worked with him. May God give you strength and loving arms to uphold you during this time. With all our love, Sandy and Jerry Nook

Leslie, as you know Jerry and I were a duo in representing management in relations with the APG unions. It was such a pleasure working withJer; he was a perfect fit foremployee relations. I believe with Jerry involved our union relations were about the best in decades. We actually worked as a union-mgt team to solve problems. Jerry was the calm, steady hand and he kept my butt out of trouble many times. I regret not staying in touch after we retired. Leslie, our best to you in this difficult time.
