Obituary

Arlene Beverly Swarthout, a beacon of nurturing and wisdom, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2025, at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, MD. Born on May 26, 1951, in Havre de Grace, MD, Arlene's journey through life was marked by her loving nature, intelligence, and selfless dedication to those around her. Her vibrant spirit and warm presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew her.

Arlene was a proud graduate of Aberdeen High School's class of 1969, after which she pursued her passion for caring for others by obtaining a nursing degree from Prince George's Community College. Arlene’s education in nursing led her to a Masters in nursing administration and her commitment to healthcare led her to a fulfilling career as a Nursing Administrator, where she not only excelled professionally but also served as a mentor to countless nurses at the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. Arlene's influence extended far beyond her professional endeavors, as she touched lives through her community involvement and volunteer work.

Though she spent a recent portion of her life in Lodi, California, Arlene's heart always remained in Maryland, close to her roots and her cherished family. She was the loving matriarch of a family that include her daughter Lani Swarthout; grandchildren Dalton and Dayne Swarthout; and great-grandchildren Evelyn, Emmett, and Colton. Arlene was the pillar of strength and the epitome of love for her family, guiding them through life's challenges and celebrations with equal measures of wisdom and affection.

Arlene was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Larry Swarthout; her devoted parents, Arthur and Frances Elliott; her son, Ronald Swarthout; her precious daughter, Elizabeth Swarthout; and her brother, Buddy Elliott. She is survived by her sister, Patty Poughkeepsie, who, along with the rest of the family, will continue to honor Arlene's legacy by living out the values she embodied so gracefully.

Known for her quilting and sewing talents, Arlene's creations were not just blankets or garments but woven narratives of her love and care. She was a talker, always ready to share stories, advice, and laughter. Her passion for helping others shone brightly through her tutoring and her constant willingness to lend a hand where needed. Arlene's life was one of devotion, not only to her family but to everyone whose life she touched.

Arlene's life story is one of unwavering commitment to her family, her career, and her community. Her legacy of love, service, and education will continue to inspire those who knew her. As we bid farewell to Arlene Beverly Swarthout, we celebrate the remarkable life she led and the countless ways in which she enriched our world. Her memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those she leaves behind.

I’m met Arlene in 1986 when we were both in a bachelor of nursing science program. During that time I went to work at Kaiser where Arlene was working, and we became fast friends. We went boating together, spent time at our cabin in the mountains, And we spent a lot of time laughing. When Arlene moved back to Maryland, I went to visit her on several occasions. Then Arlene returned to Lodi and we spent a lot of time together. We would sit on her back patio and visit for hours. We enjoyed the same restaurants so we went to lunch or dinner often. We played bunco together, did a Bible study together, and she even tried to teach me to sew. Rest in peace Arlene, I will miss you terribly. My condolences go out to the family. May God bring you peace while you grieve your loved one.

I feel so lucky my sister married your grandson because it meant I got to know you in this lifetime. You have inspired me and encouraged me to live the width of life and not just the length of it. You were everything I want to be; intelligent, trailblazing, funny, friend, fashionable, creative and a family woman. I don’t think I’ll ever forget your laugh and the way we could girl chat for hours. You are a modern woman and traditional, spunky and full of depth, wise and the life of the party, resilient as hell and still so gentle. I will remember your spirit and your face in my niece and nephews. Although I’m not a Swarthout, I will miss you tremendously. Thank you for celebrating with me and grieving with me through the last ten years. I now grieve for you and celebrate you are pain free and with more family. I love you Arlene! ♥️

Almost 1year ago(January 1) Arlene came to my home for a holiday feast. What a lovely time we had. I recently learned of her passing. My heart is so sad. I loved her so much and I am proud to be able to call her my friend. We quilted, laughed and cried together. I will hold her memories close to my heart and remember her with much fondness. I will always miss you Arlene
