Obituary

Melvin Grant Fletcher Sr. beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend passed away the evening of October 5th, 2025 at 87 years old. Known to his friends as “Bud”, he was born on November 23rd, 1937 in Flintstone, Maryland as the 2nd son of Ellis Fletcher and Linnie Odella Barnes. Melvin moved to Havre de Grace, Maryland in 1950’s and was a current resident of Hubert, North Carolina where he spent his later years enjoying retirement in a warmer, peaceful setting.

Melvin was preceded in death by is first wife Janet Virginia Fogle, Son Ronald Jay Fletcher Sr. (Ronnie), and Melvin Grant Fletcher Jr. (also known as Bud).

Melvin is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years Brenda Jean Fletcher of Hubert, North Carolina, Son Robert R. Fletcher (Randy) of Hubert, North Carolina, Daughter Karen L. Hardin of Newport, North Carolina, Rodney W. Fletcher of Elkton, Maryland, and his stepdaughter Natalie R. Stewart of Danforth, Maine. He also leaves behind many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Born and raised in the Appalachian Mountains of Western Maryland, he developed a deep love for the outdoors that stayed with him throughout his life. From the early days of exploring mountain trails to “dip net” fishing on the Susquehanna River, he found joy in nature’s quiet beauty. He was never far from a bonfire, a fishing pole, or the thrill of a trap shooting match.

Melvin’s love of bluegrass and country music carried him on camping trips to Pennsylvania music festivals, where he felt right at home among the songs and stories of the hills from which he came. Known for his strong work ethic and business-minded focus, Melvin spent much of his life in the financial field before retiring. Known as a father with a firm hand, he had a gentle side that very few knew.

A graveside service will be held for family members only. A public service will be held on a later date.

Four generations of Fletcher boys here after my first son Caleb was born. There is a funny story here, with my Dad (Bud Jr.) telling Poppy (Bud Sr.) to "make sure you support his head now" as I was handing him baby Caleb. Poppy got a stern look and said "I know how to hold a baby. Give me that kid." He always had a joke or a quick witted remark, with some that would catch you off guard, with everyone always having a good laugh. In his retirement years he loved to play cards, and would hang out all night doing just that. I also have many fond memories of our family RV trips, with my first being near here to Emerald Isle. He will forever be missed. Rest in Peace Poppy
