Obituary
We come together to honor and celebrate the life of Ruth Mary Heldman, a beacon of love and generosity who graced this world with her presence from March 16, 1929, to December 17, 2025. Ruth was born in, and spent most of her early years on a farm in rural Missouri. Her final moments were spent surrounded by the warmth of her home in Aberdeen, Maryland; the same home she'd lived in with family for the past 70 years. She was a woman of courage and boundless love, leaving behind a legacy of kindness that will be felt for generations.
Ruth was the beloved matriarch of a family that revered her as the cornerstone of their lives. She was the devoted wife of Cletus B. Heldman for an incredible 74 years, a partnership that was a testament to enduring love and mutual respect. Together, they raised a family that reflected their values and compassion. Her sons, Stephen, with his wife Denise, and Bruce, with his wife Ashley, will carry forward the lessons of integrity and hard work she instilled in them. Her daughter, Cindy Rich, and her husband Gary, will continue to spread the warmth and hospitality that Ruth was known for. Though she was preceded in death by her brothers Clarence, Aloysius, and Donald, and her sisters Marcella, Isabella, and Thelma, and Anastasia, her grandchildren Brian and Mark Rich will remember her for the tales of joy and family history she lovingly shared.
Ruth's professional journey as an Administrative Assistant at Aberdeen Proving Ground was marked by her meticulous nature and commitment to excellence. Her colleagues will remember her as a pillar of reliability and grace under pressure. Her work ethic was unparalleled, and she became a model for many who had the pleasure of working alongside her.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Ruth was an artisan in her own right. Her hands were rarely still, as she poured her love into quilting and basketmaking, among many other crafts. She was also an excellent baker, her recipes and creations being the highlight of many family gatherings. Ruth enjoyed traveling and exploring new places with family and friends, which she always delighted in sharing upon her return.
A long-time member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Ruth's faith was a source of strength and inspiration. She lived her beliefs through acts of service and kindness, touching the lives of many within her community.
Ruth Heldman was the epitome of courage, generosity, and love. Her smile could light up a room, and her laughter was infectious. She faced life's challenges with a brave and faithful heart. For Ruth, these challenges included being a 3-time cancer survivor and a victim of the terrible disease known as Alzheimer's. Whatever life's ups and downs brought, that quiet sense of grace and dignity was ever-present in her character. She enriched the lives of those around her with the love of her kind heart and by simply being herself.
As we say farewell to Ruth Mary Heldman, we acknowledge the emptiness her passing leaves behind. Yet, we also celebrate the countless memories and the indelible mark she has left on the hearts of those who knew her. Ruth's story is one of a life well-lived and well-loved. She will be profoundly missed, but her spirit will continue to guide and comfort us in the days to come.
