Obituary
Erna Haddon of Havre de Grace, a beacon of kindness and wisdom, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2025, at Upper Chesapeake Hospital in Bel Air, Maryland. Born on May 7, 1927, in the picturesque city of Innsbruk, Austria, Erna's journey through life was marked by love, dedication, and a nurturing spirit that touched the lives of many.
Erna, as she was affectionately known by friends and family, was the cherished daughter of the late Ernest and Maria Buchgeiher. She grew up surrounded by the love of her siblings Eric, Margaret, and Maria, all of whom predeceased her. Her formative years in Austria laid a strong foundation of resilience and compassion, qualities that would come to define her throughout her life.
In the company of her beloved husband, the late William S. Haddon, Erna built a life full of shared dreams and enduring love. Together they welcomed two wonderful children into the world, Ronald Haddon of Havre de Grace and Jeannette Ann Curtsinger. Erna's role as a mother was one of her greatest joys, and she embraced every moment with grace and tenderness. Her love extended to her cherished grandchildren, Mark Curtsinger and Cheryl French, who will forever hold dear the memories of their grandmother's gentle guidance and unconditional support.
Erna's professional life was characterized by hard work and diligence. For many years, she dedicated herself as a machine operator in a sewing factory, where her attention to detail and strong work ethic were greatly valued. Her colleagues not only respected her for her skills but also cherished her for the warmth and friendship she brought to the workplace.
Beyond her work, Erna was an active member of the Retired Officers Association, where she formed lasting friendships and found a sense of camaraderie. Her faith was an integral part of her life, and as a devout member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, she found solace and strength in her community. Erna's hands were rarely still, as she found joy in the art of crochet, creating beautiful pieces that would become treasured keepsakes for those she loved.
To describe Erna as kind, wise, and loving only begins to touch upon the remarkable woman she was. Her wisdom was a guiding light for her family, her kindness a comfort to her friends, and her loving nature a blessing to all who knew her. Her legacy is one of quiet strength, enduring love, and the gentle touch of a woman who lived her life with purpose and grace.
As we bid farewell to Erna Haddon, we do so with heavy hearts filled with gratitude for the time we shared with her. Her passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but the memories of her love and wisdom will continue to inspire and guide us. Erna's life was a testament to the beauty of a life well-lived, and she will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
