Barbara Dean Griest of Bel Air, Maryland, a cherished soul known for her boundless generosity and selfless nature, passed away on December 15, 2025, after many years of health issues. She was surrounded by love, in her final days, at the Senator Bob Hooper House in Forest Hill, Maryland, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and service. Born on August 17, 1938, in Bastian, Virginia, to Lafayette and Bertha Sexton, Barbara grew into a woman whose life was marked by her deep Christian faith and her unwavering dedication to helping others.
Barbara's journey through life was shared with her beloved husband of 69 years, Keith B. Griest, who predeceased her. Together, they built a family that included their devoted daughter, Debra L. Griest, and her husband, Walter Johnson. Barbara was also predeceased by a brother and three sisters. She leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will miss her warmth and guidance. A special mention must be made of Diane Carl, a woman who was like a daughter to Barbara and a sister to Debra, embodying the family's close-knit bonds.
As the former owner and operator of Economy Video in Edgewood, Barbara touched the lives of many through her entrepreneurial spirit. Prior to owning the video store, she sold Avon and Tupperware, where she not only provided quality products but also lasting friendships. Barbara's involvement in the community was further exemplified through her coordination of the Harford County FISH Program and her active participation in AGLOW, a Women's Christian Fellowship that mirrored her own values of faith and fellowship.
The Bel Air Church of the Nazarene was a spiritual home for Barbara, where she attended services and lived out her faith with tenacity and devotion. Her interests were as varied as they were heartfelt, from crocheting to needlepoint, a craft at which she excelled, winning several blue ribbons. Barbara's love for travel allowed her to explore and embrace the world beyond her doorstep, yet she always returned home with renewed zeal to serve her community.
Barbara's life was a testament to the words that best describe her: generous, kind, and selfless. These attributes were reflected in every aspect of her life, from the way she ran her businesses to the manner in which she cared for her family and friends. Her tireless efforts to uplift those around her will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
