Elizabeth Carlota Koenig, R.N., 84, of Bel Air, MD, formerly of Aberdeen, passed away peacefully at Bel Air Assisted Living on January 16, 2026.
Born in New York, NY, on August 16, 1941, Elizabeth was the daughter of Augustin Edward Collazo and Elizabeth Grace Collazo. She was a graduate of Milford Mill High School in Baltimore, MD, and of the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing in 1962. That year she married the late Frederick James Koenig, her devoted husband of 59 years, and together they raised five sons in Aberdeen. Their home was open to all as the family gathering place, where countless holidays and birthdays were celebrated.
She served her community in many ways, working first as a Public Health Nurse in some of Baltimore’s poorest neighborhoods. She later served as head nurse at the Father Martin Ashley Treatment Center in Havre de Grace, MD. She always combined her love and passion for helping others with her spirituality, whether serving as the parish nurse for St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Aberdeen or making home visits as a member of the Mission of Mercy mobile clinic team. Throughout her career she was the embodiment of holistic healing with love.
Libby loved working in her home garden, and excelled at sewing, knitting and the fiber arts. She never forgot a birthday and kept in touch with loved ones through beautifully written letters and carefully selected cards.
Elizabeth is survived by five sons, Frederick Koenig (Debora) of White Marsh, MD, Peter Koenig (Delores) of Elkton, MD, Michael Koenig (Anna) of Spry, PA, Matthew Koenig (Kerry) of Havre de Grace and Charles Koenig of Havre de Grace; 6 grandchildren, Matthew, Jr., Theresa, Peter, Jr., Jenna, Claire, and Tony Bramble; and 7 great grandchildren. She is also survived by siblings Tom Collazo (Debbie) of Tucson, AZ, Maria Pierce (Paul) of New Market, MD, and Tina Collazo of Tucson, AZ. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by brothers Fred (Wendy), David and Steve Collazo.
A visitation will be held on SATURDAY, January 25, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. with a wake service at 4:00 at Tarring-Cargo Funeral Home, 333 S. Parke St., Aberdeen, MD.
