Obituary

On January 4, Bynum Doughton Simmons passed away at the age of 92 after having battled with chronic kidney disease for years. Bynum was a lifelong resident of Harford County, an active member of Oak Grove Baptist Church for many years, and attended Hopewell Methodist Church later in life. The youngest son of Major McKinley Simmons and Amelia Blanche (Cockerham) Simmons, Bynum was born on June 7, 1928, in Churchville, MD, and never lived more than 10 minutes away. After leaving the family farm, he spent his career working in or managing the parts department for various car dealerships in the area. Bynum’s true passion was his music, whether leading congregational singing in a church, singing lead in a gospel quartet, entertaining at a nursing home or church event, or playing his banjo or guitar with friends in his home. Many people will remember him as the man who tuned the piano in their home, a part-time role he enjoyed for over 50 years. He is survived by his son, Daniel; his daughter, Terry; son-in-law, Ken Moore; their daughters, Kristina and Jennifer, and their husbands and four children; his dear friend, Hazel Coen; and his nephew, Paul Simmons. He is predeceased by his brother, Alton H. Simmons; nephew, Howard C. Simmons; and his wife of 20 years, Betty Jean (Scarborough) Simmons. Bynum, modest and soft-spoken, enjoyed a long life full of love, friendship, faith, and music. Instead of flowers, contributions can be made to Hopewell United Methodist Church, 3600 Level Village Rd, Havre De Grace, MD 21078. Due to COVID restrictions, the family is holding a private remembrance service at Tarring-Cargo Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Uncle Bynam (my aunt was his wife Betty) was one of the finest men I ever knew. I am forever thankful for the loving marriage he had with Betty and for the brotherhood he shared with my father.

What a dear man. Met him while he worked at DeBonis Chevrolet and would occasionally see him at different social events. I'm sure he has already received the "angel wings" and will look after his family and dear friends.

It was a pleasure to be a friend to Bynum. Sue and I have many fond memories of our times together. I was fortunate to be able to play music with him at so many functions around the county and especially our 15 years playing weekly at Citizens care center. He was a joy to be around and will be dearly missed. Vernon
