Bobby W. Cheek

March 25, 1937 – February 17, 2026

With love and gratitude for a life well lived, we celebrate Bob, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who passed away peacefully at home on February 17, 2026, at the age of 88, surrounded by his family.

Bob was born in Milton, North Carolina, to Minor Shields and Texie Cheek. He grew up in a large family that helped shape his strong, independent spirit. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Sonny, Ray, Jack, and Jimmy, and is survived by his brother Billy and sister Patsy.

Bob proudly enlisted and served honorably in the United States Army, including service in Korea. After returning home, he built a long and respected career at Aberdeen Proving Ground, where he worked as Branch Chief of Ballistics. He was known for his strong work ethic, sharp mind, and steady leadership, earning the respect of those who worked alongside him.

Retirement suited Bob well. It gave him the time to enjoy the things that truly made him happy, especially golf. What began as a pastime became a second home at Ruggles Golf Course, where he spent many years, both playing and working. The friendships he made there meant a great deal to him, and the laughter and stories shared with the men at the course were some of his favorite moments.

Bob found joy in simple, hands-on work. He loved building birdhouses, working in the yard, cutting trees, and splitting firewood, and keeping everything just the way he liked it. Few things made him happier than mowing on his John Deere tractor or sitting quietly on his deck, taking in the view, and enjoying the peace around him. Independent and determined by nature, he stayed strong-willed and true to himself right up to the very end.

He was also a proud Mason, serving as Master Mason and receiving his Worshipful Master ring at a young age, an honor he carried with pride throughout his life.

Above all else, Bob loved his family, his wife Mary Jane. and he was a proud father to his four daughters, MaryLynn, Jamie, Angela (deceased), and Trish, and a father-in-law to Steve, Rolf, and Jesse. Steve, whom Bob often called “my buddy,” who helped him manage the many day-to-day details of life, including his medications and finances. Rolf was someone Bob could always count on, especially when something needed fixing, and each held a valued place in his life and family.

He cherished his grandchildren; Ashley, Colyn, Nicholas, Correy, Megan, and Nathan, and his great-grandchildren Marcus, Evan, Eli, and Matthew. Nothing brought him more happiness than talking about his family and watching them grow.

Bob had a natural sense of humor and a way of making people smile with just a look or one of his familiar expressions. He will be remembered for his laughter, his determination, and the steady, comforting presence he brought to those around him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on February 28, 2026 at Tarring-Cargo Funeral Home, P.A., 333 S. Parke St, Aberdeen starting at 1:00 pm with a service beginning at 3:00 pm.

Though he is no longer with us, his stories, his humor, and the love he gave so freely will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Cheek family. His strong leadership skills and attention to detail served as an inspiration for all who came in contact with Bobby. And how could we ever forget that contagious smile and sense of humor. We can all take comfort in knowing he left behind a treasure chest filled with countless memories we can all cherish forever. Bobby’s candle burned out long before his memory ever will. He will be sorely missed. With deepest sympathy. Dave & Terri Glenn

Bobby was my first boss when I began my career at APG in the Velocity Measurements Section. He, along with other lead- technicians, taught me how to set-up, maintain, and operate several methods of related instrumentation. His attitude was contagious and helped to make every program interesting. My start with this group lead the way for me to a successful 40 year career. Thanks Bobby. May you Rest In Peace.
