Obituary

Frederick O’Neill Mitchell, II, of Perryman, Maryland, died peacefully on May 10, 2026, at the age of 93.

Born on January 24, 1933, in Baltimore, Fred was the beloved son of Parker Mitchell, Jr. and Virginia Proudfoot Mitchell. He was a proud graduate of McDonogh School and the University of Maryland. Upon graduation, Fred joined the family canning business F.O. Mitchell & Bro., Inc.

Frederick’s life was rooted in family and service. He married Virginia Pearce on June 27, 1959, and together, they shared over 66 years of marriage, raising 4 boys. He was a lifelong member of Grove Presbyterian Church and the Rotary Club of Aberdeen.

He found joy in sports, including golf, lacrosse, and tennis. Fred enjoyed telling stories about Harford County, life at McDonogh, and being a brother of Kappa Alpha at UMD. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Fred and Ginny enjoyed golf and dinner with friends for years at Maryland Golf and Country Club.

Fred is a Trustee Emeritus for Johns Hopkins Medicine and McDonogh School. He was Chairman of the Board of McDonogh School and Upper Chesapeake Health System. He was a member of numerous other boards and committees. Fred’s counsel was sought by many neighbors and friends. He quietly helped many people, seeking no attention for himself. After the death of his son Joel from cancer, Fred was a tireless advocate and fundraiser for pediatric oncology research.

Fred is survived by his wife Virginia Pearce Mitchell, his children Frederick O’Neill Mitchell, IV (Jackie), Parker Mitchell, III (Trena), and Daniel Pearce Mitchell (Tammy), his grandchildren May Mitchell, Kristina Mitchell, Scott Mitchell, Rebecca Mitchell, Parker Mitchell, IV, Tiffani Mitchell-Jenkinson (Dave), Joel Mitchell, and Emily Mitchell, his great grandchildren Kai Mitchell and Zoey Jenkinson, and his sister Elizabeth (Wilbur).

Fred was preceded in death by his beloved son Joel Brown Mitchell and his brother John Parker Mitchell.

Visitation and a funeral service will be held at Grove Presbyterian Church. Visitation hours are from 2 to 4 pm and 5 to 7 pm on May 22, 2026. The funeral service will be held at 11 am on May 23, 2026. A reception will follow the ceremony.

Fred (and Brownie) were always chasing us out of the cornfields when we borrowed several dozen ears (on a regular basis. He would yell at us to ‘tell your old man he owes me $1.25.’ My sister worked in the canning factory several Summers coming home with corn kernels coming out of her ears. He was a great guy and a wonderful role model growing up in Perryman. I’m so sorry we can’t attend his services.
