Obituary

Glenice Beatrice "Granny" (Hammons) Wilson of Aberdeen died August 4 in Havre de Grace. She was 95. Born in Webster Springs, W. VA., she was the daughter of the late Sampson and Virginia Skidmore Hammons. She married Earl Ellis Wilson on July 5, 1929. He died Jan. 20, 1976, and she never remarried. In her younger days, she enjoyed playing piano and organ and would play in church and at community events. Family members said she loved taking photographs and looking at them and had enough to fill countless albums. She also enjoyed taking care of animals, everything from dogs and cats, to birds and tropical fish, to squirrels that she made sure to have enough peanuts for. Mrs. Wilson grew up in a sparsely populated coal mining area in West Virginia. She walked five miles to school every day and managed to graduate. She was a midwife in Webster County and delivered many babies. She moved to Maryland with her family in 1951 and remained in Harford County for the rest of her life. She retired from the Bata Shoe Company after 25 years on the assembly line. Mrs. Wilfon is survived by her sons, Billy Wilson of Perryville, Charles Wilson of Elkton, Kenneth Wilson of Aberdeen; daughters, Barbara "Bobby" Utt of Mansfield, Ohio; Phyllis "Peggy" Pritt of Perryville, Sharon Teague of Aberdeen, and Sheila "Doll" Wilson of Nashville, Tenn.; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by an infant son, Leroy; three brothers, nine sisters, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A funeral service was Aug. 7 at Tarring-Cargo Funeral Home in Aberdeen with Rev. Blake Ward officiating. Interment was in Harford Memorial Gardens in Aldino. I've been delivering meals on wheels to Miss Glenice for several years. She was the sweetest lady and I'm certainly going to miss seeing her each week. I was out of town from 4-11 August and read her obituary in the Aug 9 Aegis when I returned. I was so sad to hear she had passed. I'll miss her very much. My thoughts are with her children and all her family at this time.
