Obituary

William Francis Loper, of Aberdeen, died peacefully at home on October 5, 2023. He was 85.

Bill was born February 16, 1938, grew up in Munhall, Pennsylvania, attended Slippery Rock University, and moved to Maryland in 1962 for a job teaching mathematics at Aberdeen High School. He married Mary Hays Inman in 1963. Together, they forged a life filled with deep friendships, travel, and passionate devotion to family. Even on his last morning, they went out to breakfast with friends who are family.

In addition to Mary Hays, his wife of 60 years, Bill is lovingly remembered by his sons, William Loper and John (Paige Kilian) Loper, by his daughter, Sarah (Jay) Kilian, his honorary daughter, Amanda Kilian (Michael) Meehan, and his partner in grandfatherly crime, Victor Kilian (Poppers). Bill was a proud grandfather, known as Bobba to his six grandchildren: Rudy, Casey, Jonah, Jesse, Jasper, and Mazie and to his honorary grandchildren, Frankie, Carly, Pick, and Sawyer. Bill is also survived by his dear sister, Bernadine (Carl) Stigberg and his devoted nieces and nephews.

Bill enjoyed 31 years of retirement, filling it with the activities he loved: golfing at Swan Creek Country Club and later Ruggles, travel (particularly cruising), gardening, fishing, crabbing, spending time with friends and family, singing in the Choir at Grove Presbyterian, cheering for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and listening to the 1812 Overture as the sun set on his beloved Bush River.

A memorial service will be held at Grove Presbyterian Church on Saturday, October 14 at 11:00am.

We learn with sadness the passing of our friend, Bill, introduced to us by Jim and Marian Patton in 1968. The six of us became close friends celebrating milestones, many meals and traveling extensively by cruising to numerous ports. Family, friends, fun and mostly caring about people were Bill's trademarks. He was most proud of his family, his bride and friend of 60 years, Mary Hays, Billy, John and Paige, Sarah and Jay and his grandchildren. Bill led a good and active life. Now rest in peace, friend. Love, Ray and Sandy

Today, I sat at the computer and opened up the obituary to share the loss of one Marvelous Munhallian, Bill Loper, with another Marvelous Munhallian, my Dad, Larry Nee. I thought seeing the pictures would help my Dad remember Bill since he suffers from Alzheimer's. Both were born in Munhall, PA, in 1938, devoted family men, who loved to laugh with family and friends, and both retired as principals. There must have been something in that Munhall water. Dad did not need the pictures as soon as he saw the name LOPER, he said "Loper, what's he doing on the computer? Loper," with a smile and a laugh. Isn't that how we all wish to be remembered with a smile and a laugh? Glad to have laughed with you, Mr. Loper.
