Obituary

LTC Howard Francis King Jr age 73 of Aberdeen died September 26, 2009 at the Perry Point VA Hospital. Born May 29, 1936 in New Bedford, MA, Howard grew up in Massachusetts and attended the Wilbraham Academy. After grade school Howard attended the University of Massachusetts where he graduated with a BS in Economics. Shortly thereafter he was commissioned in the US Army in 1958, most notably serving two tours in Vietnam. Howard also served as a Master Instructor with the US Army Ordnance Center & School. Howard attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel with various military awards including the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Air Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal and the Parachutist Badge. After retiring from the Army, Howard was employed with the State of Maryland. His love for trains allowed him to spend much of his time visiting train museums in and around the area. Howard enjoyed traveling on the Amtrak train and knew most of the staff on board. Howard worked with the local youth and helped them develop boxing skills and encouraged them to succeed at life regardless of what career path they chose. He knew so many citizens of Aberdeen keeping everyone abreast of the local news and events. He had a love for scrapbooking and carried a camera everywhere he went. Howard made contributions to the local museum and visited the library where he would tell the staff of his latest travels. He would write to all of his friends on a weekly basis letting them know how Aberdeen was doing in the news. Howard is survived by a host of friends from all over the country and will be sorely missed by all that knew him. I will surely miss Howard as I have known him for over 32 years. He has always been a dear friend of mine and to whom I met while stationed at APG. I was very happy to have been a part of his life and may he rest in peace.

Howard put all of his energy into whatever he did. That included being a friend. He was a lovely man with a big heart and a big voice. I will remember his many kindnesses.

I want to express my sincere sympathy for the loss of your loved one. You can be assured that comfort and hope are found in the pages of the Bible. Revelations 21:4 speaks of a time when sorrow will be no more. This is a wonderful hope during our times of grief and pain. Please take care of yourselves. Sincerely

I knew Howard as a friend for 56 years, starting in Wilbraham Academy, and we corresponded intermittently throughout that period, most importantly while he served his two tours in Vietnam. He was a good person who felt passionately about many worthwhile endeavors. I am sorry that he suffered near the end, and I shall miss his contact.
