Elizabeth Ann Barnes Longley
April 01, 1926 - January 10, 2010
Obituary
Elizabeth Ann Barnes Longley died peacefully on January 10, 2010 at the Gilchrist Hospice Center in Baltimore, Maryland. She was born daughter of the late Herbert and Grace Cummings Barnes on April 1, 1926 in Aberdeen, Maryland. Betty lived in Aberdeen until her marriage to Thomas Stephen Longley. They lived on his family's property on Long Bar Harbor in Abingdon, Maryland until the outbreak of the Korean conflict when her husband was recalled into active duty as a Naval pilot. Upon her husband's discharge from active service the family moved to Lafayette, Louisiana where her daughter Ann was born. Shortly thereafter, she and her family returned to Aberdeen, ultimately settling on the Long Bar Harbor waterfront. Her husband, her brother, Herbert Barnes, Jr., and her sister, Nancy Barnes Gillis, predeceased her. She is survived by her two children and their spouses: Stephen Thomas Longley and his wife Margot Amelia of Baltimore, and Ann Elizabeth Longley and her husband Brian Fraser of Maine. Many other loving friends and family members, too numerous to name, were a continuous source of faithful support and assistance.
Betty was a devoted friend to many; people were drawn to her warm smile, fun-loving spirit, hospitality and generosity. She loved nothing more than to entertain friends and family at her lovely home on the Bush River.
Betty's paternal grandfather, Sam Barnes, was an accomplished decoy carver, whose works are on display at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels and the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum, among others. Her father continued the tradition and his works have been collected as well. Betty's artistic talents were expressed in multiple ways -- she was an accomplished seamstress and excelled in flower arranging, gardening, painting, and, most of all, interior decorating. Betty was extremely proud of her certification in Interior Decorating from Harford Community College. She went on to actualize her dream, in mid-life, of operating a small interior decorating business in Harford County.
When she wasn't working as an interior decorator, or attending functions with her garden club and bridge club, she volunteered in the office at the Grace United Methodist Church, where she was a life long member of the congregation. She also volunteered at the Veterans Administration Hospital at Perry Point, and worked in the gift shop at Harford Memorial Hospital in a volunteer capacity.
Memorial services will be held at the Grace United Methodist Church, 110 West Bel Air Avenue, Aberdeen, Maryland, 21001 on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at 11:00 AM. with a reception to follow at Gilbert Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gilchrist Hospice Care, 11311 McCormick Road, Suite 350, Hunt Valley, MD 21031.

Ann, Steve and Family, I'm so sorry for the loss of your mother. Ann-I will always remember her telling when you were coming down to visit her. I was always the one of course to ask her when I saw her. I think I remember a few times when I saw her I just looked at her and she knew what I wanted.I always remember her keeping you on your feet everytime you came to visit. I have been thinking about you. Hang in there. Steve- I will always remember your mother at Christmas gatherings. Ann and Steve- I will always remember taking walks with my grandmother when I was down at my dads and we would try to go see her. She would always come out to the walkway to come see me.
