Obituary

James Calvin Hartung of Aberdeen passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center from a stroke. He was 80 years old.

Born in Baltimore, MD he was the son of the late Milton and Kathryn (Riddle) Hartung.

He is survived by his sisters, Barbara Smith and her husband Ben of Aberdeen and Judy Yocum of Bel Air, as well as numerous cousins and other family members. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Russell Yocum.

Jim was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Aberdeen. He was a graduate of Aberdeen High School Class of 1962 and proudly served in the US Navy during Vietnam. Upon his discharge from the Navy, there was a gas explosion in the family home and he was severely injured. As a result, he was permanently paralyzed from the chest down. After a lengthy recovery and rehabilitation, he returned home. He developed many interests over the years, including furniture building, wood carving, genealogy, and working with computers. He was also an avid reader. Through the years, he overcame many medical obstacles always maintaining a positive attitude. His handicap never stopped him from enjoying life.

A visitation will be held on Friday, September 27 from 11am-1pm at the Tarring-Cargo Funeral Home where a Celebration of his life will begin at 1:00pm. Interment will be at Bel Air Memorial Gardens.

In Lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to The Humane Society of Harford County or any other animal charity of your choice.

I was so sorry to learn of Jim’s passing. We never knew each other, but communicated several years ago via email about the family tree. I had discovered his tree on the internet, which prompted me to send him an email. His great-grandmother and my great-grandmother (Amanda E.izabeth Lusby Elliott) were sisters. My hope was to further communicate with Jim and provide names from my branch of the family, but medical issues and family responsibilities intervened. When I tried to connect with him again, Jim’s Geneology was gone and my email was not answered. My husband and I were talking geneology this morning and I thought I would check on Jim again and sadly found the obituary. I so regret not following up on this years ago.
