Obituary

Van W. Brinegar, age 88 of Aberdeen, MD passed away on May 24, 2014 at Harford Memorial Hospital. A native of Wilkes County, NC Van was born on June 9, 1925 to William M. Brinegar and Ina Clyde (Taylor) Brinegar Petty. In addition to his parents he was pre-deceased by siblings, William C. Brinegar, Leonard Petty, Robert Petty and his daughter Kathy M. Brinegar. Left to mourn is his soul mate of 62 years, wife Marjorie A. Brinegar (Marsh) and daughter Karen Brinegar- Price and her husband David, all of Aberdeen. Siblings are Wanda Burlot of Aberdeen and Thomas Brinegar of Ohio. During his youth in the early 1940's Van was a member of the Civil Conservation Corps, known widely by its Depression era acronym CCC. His brother Thomas Brinegar said that Van thoroughly enjoyed his job with the CCC which included clearing and construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway. In the section of the parkway known as Daughton Park is his great uncle's home known as The Brinegar Cabin which was restored and currently stands as a landmark in the park. This experience sparked his love for his yearly gardening and countless projects made of wood that has delighted his family and friends for years. A retired civil service employee with 35 years Federal Service, Van joined the US Army in 1945 and in 1948 started his civilian career at Aberdeen Proving Ground in the Logistic Directorate. Except for two years active duty during the Korean Conflict, he spent his entire career at APG. His first active duty was at Fort Rucker, AL. While stationed in Alabama, a ride with some Army buddies and a stop at a "sweet shop" for a bite to eat, he found his future wife and together they came to Aberdeen. Van built a home, raised two daughters and was a great husband and father. Some other passions of Van's life were cooking Sunday meals for family, hunting and collecting decoys. Always a Ford truck man, he was also a lifelong member of the American Legion. He was the loving grandfather to Matthew Sly (Kate) of Decatur, IL. , Phallen, David II, and Jonathan Price, all of Aberdeen. Van was also the great-grandfather to Darwyn and Ramona Sly of Decatur, IL and Price Hampton of Aberdeen.
