Obituary

William Bernelle Cox, affectionately known as Bernie, of Aberdeen, MD, passed away after a brief battle with cancer on Tuesday, June 3rd, 2025, at Johns Hopkins Bayview in Baltimore. He was 63.

Bernie was a voracious reader, an avid trivia player, a lover of golf, and a pinball savant. His unapologetic love for Mountain Dew Code Red was as integral to his personality as his quick wit and sense of humor.

A “bug man” since his senior year of high school, Bernie was passionate and dedicated to the world of pest control, eventually assuming the role of Owner and Operator of Fidelity Exterminating in 2013—where his journey had begun back in 1979. After the acquisition of Fidelity Exterminating by American Pest in 2019, Bernie briefly “retired” before returning as Director of Business Development. His strategic insight, dedication, and passion helped shape the American Pest organization in many meaningful ways.

As a member of the Aberdeen Rotary Club, he proudly served as President during the 2017–2018 term.

Bernie is predeceased by his parents, the late Robert B. and Pauline E. Cox of Aberdeen. He is survived by his children, Lindsay M. Cox (Matt) of Bothell, WA; Robert B. Cox (Sylvia) of Arnstein, Germany; and David R. Grace (Candice) of Havre de Grace, MD; his sister, Shari Hutton (Kevin) of Street, MD; his beloved grandchildren, Mia, Adrian, and Luke; and his brothers from another mother, Steve Whiteford and Richie Bonsall.

The family will host a Celebration of Bernie’s Life on Saturday, June 21st, 2025, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the La Banque de Fleuve Seaplane Base, located at 309 Saint John Street, Havre de Grace, MD 21078. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society and raise a cold Mountain Dew Code Red in his honor.
